The produced sodium methyl mercaptan appears as a grayish-white crystalline solid. It is prone to melting and decomposition under exposure to sunlight and high temperatures, with a foul smell. It reacts with acids to produce methyl mercaptan gas. It is used in the dye, pharmaceutical and pesticide industries and can be used in the production of methionine and medoxylic acid. It can be used as a raw material for intermediates of pesticides, medicines and dyes
